Hurley’s town board will hold a public hearing July 22 on reducing the number of justices from two to one following the July 8 death of Roy Hochberg, The workload wouldn’t change much for the remaining justice, according to town attorney Matt Jankowski.
If the board reduces the number of justices following the public hearing, the action will be subject to permissive referendum. The town board must wait 30 days for residents to file a petition requiring a public vote on the matter in the November election. If no petition is filed, the change takes effect.
Hochberg, a Hurley resident since 1972, was elected to the town court in November 2019 and served until his passing. His funeral was July 20 in Kingston.
