Hail storm knocks out power across Hudson Valley

Macroburst: How the county handled the storm

A downed tree in Ulster County. (Central Hudson)

As of 7pm on Thursday, July 3, Central Hudson is reporting that 38,239 customers in the Hudson Valley are experiencing interruptions and outages of electricity, which represents a whopping 12% of their total customer base, according to their website.

“Central Hudson crews continue to respond to the power outages caused by the recent storm activity,” a statement read. “Our crews will work until the last customer is restored.”

The outage comes after a violent lightning and hail storm ripped across our region, cutting power as far south as Garrison and as far north as Germantown. Especially hard-hit were the Woodstock, West Shokan and West Hurley, in which over 6,000 customers are still without power several hours after the storm.

Central Hudson said they will be “working continuously until the last customer is restored.”

Customers were reminded to stay at least 30 feet from fallen power lines and to assume all downed lines are live.

Power outages weren’t the only concern for Hudson Valley residents — the hail was large enough to damage gardens, crops and other delicate objects.
