Ulster County appoints new Director of Arts, Culture and Open Spaces

Ulster County has named longtime local resident Sarah Kramer-Harrison as the inaugural director of Arts, Culture and Open Spaces, a newly created role within the Department of Tourism starting June 30. The position, budgeted at $72,495.36 annually, is part of County Executive Jen Metzger’s initiative to implement the “Imagine Ulster” Arts and Culture Master Plan, which emphasizes support for local artists, expanded arts education, and cultural-driven economic development.

“It’s truly remarkable to see Ulster County leaders dedicate such significant effort to an arts and culture plan,” Kramer-Harrison wrote on Facebook. “In challenging times, the arts are often the first place cuts happen. But not here, not in Ulster County! This commitment is a testament to our community’s foresight and dedication to a vibrant future. Let’s make some magic happen!”

Kramer-Harrison will oversee efforts to centralize arts event promotion, build a resource hub for artists, and integrate arts programming into county services and public spaces. She brings experience from the District Attorney’s Office, where she worked in victim support and project management roles. She holds degrees in music and education, is certified in teaching, and has a background in grant writing. Additionally, she founded Kramer-Harrison Music and has led arts programs for youth and seniors, earning recognition for her advocacy in arts access and community engagement.
