Extreme heat continues to scorch Ulster County, here’s where to cool off

Extreme heat warnings continued for the second day in a row in the Hudson Valley as weather patterns conspired to keep daytime highs above 90 degrees for at least another day. According to forecasters, we’ll have to wait until mid-week for thunderstorms and rain to cool off.

Cooling centers are open — most area libraries are making themselves available for the hot and huddled masses who lack air conditioning in their home. Ulster County has also set up official cooling centers in Kingston at 2nds Iglesia La Mision Church in Kingston (80 Elmendorf St., 9am-6pm) and Trudy Center in Ellenville (50 Center St., 9am-5pm).

Of course, another great option for cooling off are Ulster County’s many public pools.

Kingstoners will unfortunately have to wait until tomorrow for the Kingston Point beach to officially open, and the Andretta Pool and splash pad is not scheduled to officially open until Saturday. And the Moriello pool in New Paltz doesn’t open until Saturday either. Seems like municipal pools aren’t keeping up with global warming!

Central Hudson was working to restore power to hundreds of area residents without electricity to run cooling appliances on some of the hottest days of the year.

The heat has been so relentless, events are being canceled. After postponing their Food Truck Fiesta for one week due to rain, the Bloomington Fire Department announced yesterday it was canceling the June date altogether due to the stifling heat index.
