Kingston man perpetrated violence against children, allege police

On Tuesday, April 15, Kingston Police arrested 36-year-old Jeffery Roberts following reports that he violated a full stay-away order of protection and engaged in violent conduct involving children.

Roberts faces multiple charges, including:
– Two counts of Attempted Assault in the Second Degree (Class E felony)
– One count of Attempted Strangulation in the Second Degree (Class E felony)
– Four counts of Criminal Contempt in the First Degree (Class E felony)
– Five counts of Criminal Contempt in the Second Degree (Class A misdemeanor)
– Three counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child (Class A misdemeanor)

Police responded to an apartment on Wall Street at approximately 5:25pm after receiving a report that Roberts was in violation of a court-issued protective order. Upon arrival, detectives found Roberts inside the residence of the protected party. He was immediately taken into custody and transported to Kingston Police Headquarters.

During interviews with the victim and children, investigators learned that Roberts allegedly placed a leather belt around the neck of one of the children and attempted to lift the child off the ground. Police say he also made physical contact with the protected party and the children during the altercation.

Roberts was processed and held for arraignment. He has since been remanded to Ulster County Jail with bail.

The case remains under investigation. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Detective Michael DeFrance or Detective Ernie VanDeMark at 845-943-8404, or via email at mdefrance@kingston-ny.gov or evandemark@kingston-ny.gov.
