Rameen L. Perry, 40, of the Capri Motel, Port Ewen, died early this morning at Kingston Hospital following an assault in the village of Saugerties.
The suspect, Earl T. Edwards, 26, of Old Stage Rd., Saugerties, was discovered shortly after 2:30 p.m. on a passenger train in Washington D.C. and taken into custody by plain clothes members of Amtrak Police and charged with second-degree murder.
Police received a 911 call at 3:23 a.m. reporting an assault at 8A Malden Ave. (Rt. 9W), across the street from Seamon Park. Upon Arrival Police discovered Perry on the second floor of the residence. Perry had sustained several stab wounds. Paramedics from DIAZ Ambulance transported Perry to the Health Alliance Hospital Broadway Campus in Kingston. Shortly after arrival to the Hospital Perry succumbed to his injuries.
The Ulster County District Attorney’s Office will seek the return of Edwards to Ulster County to face charges. No one else at the residence, which is in a two-family home, was injured in the dispute. Saugerties police were assisted by the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office and the NYS Police Criminal Investigation Bureau.
Mayor William Murphy, who was out of town, said in a phone conversation that he lives about 100 feet from the murder scene.
“Unfortunately no town is immune from this type of thing,” Murphy said.
