I’ve been meaning to read the Game of Thrones books – or book, I should say, seeing how George R. R. Martin’s series actually goes by another name, A Song of Ice and Fire – ever since I saw the credits on the pilot for the HBO series. But time has this way of sneaking up on me. Thank heavens for the Golden Notebook, Woodstock’s independent bookstore, which will start presenting Sunday-afternoon readings from the series with the mellifluously voiced Oliver Wyman doing all the parts. Leg of mutton will be served.
Wyman is an actor and voice artist best-known for his work in audiobooks and animation, where he has been featured doing voices in the Pokémon, Yu-Gi-Oh and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. His audiobook narration is a consistent award-winner – and hey, this sounds fun!
For those out there who don’t know the basic plot, we’re talking about an ancient world where winters are long, and the kingdoms are fighting. The racy plots are all about machinations and familial bonds, dire wolves and dragons. It’s dense stuff: Think Tolkien on steroids.
