Dorothy Emig

Dorothy passed away in the morning of April 3, 2025 at home, peacefully in her sleep among the company of her close family.

Daughter of the late Gertrude Becker and Conrad Emig, Dorothy was born and raised in Hurley, NY, she graduated from Kingston High School in 1965, earned a BA from SUNY New Paltz in 1969, a MSW from Adelphi University School of Social Work in 1978 and an Advanced Certificate in Clinical Social Work from NYU in 1987. Dorothy and her husband, Jim Hanson, had a cut flower farm (White Oak Gardens) for many years. She was an avid gardener and particularly enjoyed propagating plants which she shared with family, friends and neighbors, spreading the joy and enhancing many gardens. She loved nature and the outdoors and was concerned about preserving open spaces for future generations. Early on in her life, she showed a natural sensitivity and empathy which later developed into a boundless compassion that encompassed not only other people but all living creatures and the world we all share.

Dorothy and Jim began dating in the summer of 1978 and married in June, 1982. Both of them would tell you they had a very special relationship. Over their 42+ years of marriage, their commitment and love for each only grew.

After her retirement, Dorothy did volunteer work for Hospice, CASA, CCEUC Master Gardner Program, and Woodstock Area Meals on Wheels as well as committing numerous acts of kindness. She was also a member of the Budding Flower Sangha where she contributed with her sense of spirituality and love of life and compassion for all living things.
