Multiple car accident injuries, medical emergencies push Kingston first responders to limit

The Kingston Fire Department reported facing an intense 24-hour period yesterday, responding to 31 emergency calls, including a sharp rise in medical incidents. To manage the demand, crews had to staff an out-of-service ambulance on five separate occasions.

The most critical incident occurred around 8:15pm at the intersection of Route 9W and Murray St., when emergency services were dispatched to a three-vehicle collision. The severity of the crash, which involved reports of an unconscious individual and multiple injuries, led to the deployment of two fire engines and both advanced life support ambulances. Upon arrival, responders found six people requiring medical attention. The vehicles involved were identified as a 2019 Toyota, a 2016 Ford Escape, and a 2015 Nissan Altima.

Support from Diaz Ambulance was also requested, with an ALS unit dispatched immediately after completing another hospital transport. In total, Kingston Fire Department transported four patients—two to Health Alliance Hospital and two to a hospital in the Poughkeepsie area, all under paramedic supervision. Two other individuals were evaluated by Diaz Ambulance but declined transport.

The Kingston Police Department and the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office assisted at the scene, and the cause of the accident remains under investigation by Kingston Police.

Despite the resources dedicated to the crash, emergency calls continued. Three additional incidents across the city required off-duty personnel to be called in to staff extra equipment and another ambulance.
