Shandaken ambulance drivers get a raise

On Sunday. Feb. 2, an unfortunate series of events in the Town of Ulster led to a woman being hospitalized, a man being airlifted to the hospital, and his son being arrested for confronting first responders.

Ulster police initially responded to a 911 call reporting a one-car accident involving a personal injury on Main Street in the hamlet of Ruby. The driver, Angela Parker, a 55-year-old resident, complained of back pain following the crash and was transported to HealthAlliance Hospital for treatment, according to police.

While emergency personnel attended to Parker, 72-year-old local resident Charles Servo Jr. attempted to assist by directing an approaching Empress Ambulance closer to the crash site. As the ambulance moved forward, it slid on icy pavement. Servo Jr. tried to move out of its path but slipped on the ice as well, and was struck by the ambulance. Emergency medical staff at the scene immediately provided first aid, and a LifeNet helicopter transported Servo Jr. to Albany Medical Center, where he is currently being treated for his injuries. Authorities have not disclosed details about his condition.

Shortly after the incident, Servo Jr.’s 50-year-old son, Charles Servo III, arrived at the scene. Police say he became confrontational, threatening officers and medical workers who were assisting his father. Despite repeated warnings to calm down, Servo III continued causing a disturbance, interfering with the ongoing investigation. He was subsequently arrested and charged with obstruction of governmental administration, a misdemeanor, and harassment, a violation. He was issued tickets to appear in Ulster Town Court and released. The investigation remains ongoing, police confirmed.

Multiple agencies assisted the Ulster Police Department during the response, including the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office, New York State Police, Saugerties Police, the Ruby Fire Department, and Empress Ambulance Services.
