Queens man in Saugerties catches 4 felony drug charges, 3 misdemeanors

According to police, Kingston resident Gary White, 77, was “crossing Broadway from the corner of Orchard Street at Dairy Mart Parking Lot toward Rondout Savings Bank” at about 5:30pm on Dec. 27 when he was suddenly struck by a 2012 GMC Terrain driven by Mallory Kitchen, 20 years old, of Kingston.

White was taken to Westchester Medical Center. Despite measures to save his life, he succumbed to his injuries approximately eight hours later, police said.

Police said in a press release posted six days after the accident that they determined White had “not been utilizing a pedestrian crosswalk” when he was struck by Kitchen’s vehicle.

At the time of this writing, no charges had yet been filed against Kitchen, and the investigation was ongoing. Kitchen was the sole occupant of the vehicle, according to police, who said she remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation.

“My deepest sympathies are with Gary White’s family along with his numerous friends in the community who are deeply affected with his passing,” wrote Alderwoman Michele Hirsch (Ward 9) on Facebook.

“Mallory Kitchen, the individual involved, is the daughter of Eric Kitchen, who serves as the City of Kingston’s Zoning Officer and is also an Ulster County Legislator representing District 4 (Town of Ulster),” pointed out local activist group KingstonCitizens.org in a Facebook comment, urging transparency and fairness throughout the investigation.

Kingston Police are available to receive any information from witnesses of the accident. Contact city police at 845-331-8404, email Det. Jason Charest at jcharest@kingston-ny.gov or call him at 845-331-8404.
