What a rollercoaster ride for Ulster County’s discount store fans. The Big Lots store occupying the old Burlington Coat Factory space in the Town of Ulster confirmed today with HV1 they would in fact be staying open, weeks after the company announced the closure of the store amid bankruptcy proceedings.
Big Lots opened its cavernous Kingston location on August 18, 2022, bringing discount furniture, home decor, groceries, seasonal items, toys, and a generally random assortment of unsold products cast off from retailers and manufacturers.
While its Wappingers Falls location indicated it too was no longer closing as reported, other New York Big Lots such as the one in Middletown are still on the chopping block.
Big Lots shut down 52 stores in 2023, and throughout this year announced its intention to close hundreds of stores in 2024 and 2025. It’s all part of a restructuring which culminated in their September bankruptcy announcement and subsequent agreement to be sold to private equity firm Nexus Capital Management, ironically picking it up at a discount.
