Last month, Saugerties Central School District (SCSD) celebrated the community’s efforts in raising $75,000 to help restore modified sports after they were cut from the school budget. Now, the kindness continues with another act of giving. Members of the Atonement Lutheran Church in Saugerties donated 76 brand-new backpacks filled with essential school supplies. These backpacks will be given to students identified as in need, including those who are homeless.
Diane Swart, a church member who spearheaded the backpack drive, shared how much joy it brought her to contribute to the success of the most vulnerable. Saugerties Superintendent Dr. Daniel Erceg expressed his gratitude, saying, “Thank you for always stepping up and supporting our kids — together, we will make sure every student succeeds.”
Saugerties Sings to begin its second season
Saugerties Sings will sing its way into a second season beginning Tuesday, September 10 at its new location, according to the community chorus founder, Gerri Ryan. “We had a great first season even stepping out with some public performances which were so uplifting as community members joined in,” said Ryan. “Singing closes divisions among people and brings joy. That’s our mission with this chorus.”
The new location of practice sessions is at the United Methodist Church at 67 Washington Avenue. “There should be ample street parking and the entry to the church is through the side door,” said Ryan. “Please arrive at 6:30 p.m. to settle in and practice then begins at 7 p.m.
Phyllis Elaine Clark will continue as music director and will be offering separate workshops such as sight reading and a capella jazz, among others. “While preparing for this season’s programs there is ample opportunity for input from the chorus members,” Ryan said. “This is really about singing for enjoyment and we love to sing our members’ favorites. And most importantly the chorus is all inclusive; no experience or sheet reading is necessary.”
A $5 fee to cover overhead continues. Contact Ryan at fiddlestitchtoday@gmail.com for additional information or to join the newsletter and mailing list.
