Jonathan Taylor Rice aged 33, passed away on August 18, 2024, in Hurley, NY. Born on June 3, 1991, in Syracuse, NY, Jonathan was known for his caring, witty, and bright personality, as well as his culinary creations, sense of humor, and deep love of his wife and family. He was an amazing people person and could have a deep and engaging conversation with anyone about anything. He had that gift and many others.Â
Jonathan graduated from New Paltz High School before furthering his education at SUNY Cobleskill and The Culinary Institute of America. His passion for culinary arts led him to work at notable establishments, including The Florence in Savannah, Georgia, Uchi Restaurant and Red Ash Italia in Austin, Texas, and Parisi Italian in Denver, Colorado. After marrying Shannon, he returned to New York to continue his culinary career in the Hudson Valley. Jonathan truly enjoyed leading the culinary team at the 100-Course Meal held in Los Angeles, California. Working with several local and celebrity chefs was one of the highlights of his culinary career.Â
Outside the kitchen, Jonathan enjoyed snowboarding, line dancing, and hiking with his wife and their dogs, Butters and Wally, and their cat, Jet. He was at his happiest when he was with his family to share meals, stories, and memories. He would talk for hours with his brother, Jake, about Star Wars, comic book movies, and video games. Jonathan was a good friend, and in return, he was blessed with good friends. His vibrant spirit enriched the lives of those around him.
Jonathan is survived by his wife, Shannon Rice; his mother, Maria Contento Rice; his sister, Tammy Rice Nelson; his brother, Jacob Travis Starmer (Mindy); and his nephew and nieces, Nicholas Patrick Nelson, Erin Elizabeth Nelson, Shannon Nicole Nelson, and Ellanora Gilda Starmer. He was preceded in death by his father, Jerry Allen Rice.
Calling hours will be held at Copeland-Hammerl Funeral Home on Saturday, August 24, 2024, from 2:00–4:00 pm, followed by a memorial service at 4:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Jerry A. Rice Scholarship through the NPCSD Foundation for Student Enhancement, honoring Jonathan’s memory and his father’s legacy.
