Poughkeepsie man wins $501,040 at 2024 World Series of Poker

Poughkeepsie-based professional poker player Francis Anderson beat a field of 4,263 players this past weekend to win first place in the 2024 World Series of Poker (WSOP) “Independence Day Celebration” tournament, earning him a coveted WSOP bracelet and over half a million in cash. The buy-in was just $800, with the prize money representing a return on investment of 62,525 percent (before taxes).

Anderson was already an accomplished poker pro, with many tournament cashes over the years now totaling north of $1.7 million dollars.

Anderson is in a good position to increase that number even more. On Wednesday, he was sitting comfortably with the 7th biggest stack of chips out of 1,524 remaining players in the WSOP Main Event, the poker world’s most prestigious tournament. The buy-in for “The Main” is $10,000, and the top prize is good for $10 million.

Contrary to popular belief, poker is a game of skill, albeit with a large element of luck. The best players consistently beat the field through diligent study, practice and self-improvement.
