Graffiti recently found under the bridge over the Esopus Creek in the village is not gang-related, said Police Chief Joseph Sinagra, unless it is, as one tag suggests, a “nerd gang” that “loves math.”

George Terpening, village Parks, Buildings and Grounds superintendent, said his crew was doing some work on the Village Beach park when they found the graffiti as well as beer cans and broken liquor bottles under the bridge.

Terpening said that last year graffiti and evidence of drinking were found under the bridge as well.

“We recently painted over the graffiti from the last incident,” Terpening said, “and then we went back and there was new writing.”

Sinagra said that his detectives have determined the work is not that of any gang but probably kids partying under the bridge. He hopes that stepped-up patrols at the park will put an end to the problem.
