In the background, Dream poet Marshall James Kavanaugh of Philadelphia is busily writing a poem on his Smith Corona about Joseph, a three-year-old pit bull coonhound being trained by Regina Whateley of Saugerties. People commissioned Kavanaugh to write a spontaneous typewritten poem on any subject of their choosing.

The Kingston Farmers’ Market

The Kingston Farmers’ Market final November event will take place on November 20. Then bundle up and visit the market at the County Courthouse parking lot on December 5 and 19. There will be 25 food vendors joined by local artisans from Made In Kingston. The Senate Garage on North Front Street will host the indoor winter market during January and February. Veterans’ Day ceremony November 11

The annual Veterans’ Day ceremony will be held inside City Hall in Kingston on November 11 at 11 a.m., followed by a rifle salute and playing of “Taps” on the front lawn. The public is invited and encouraged to attend. For further information, contact Kingston Veterans’ Association chairman Bill Forte at (845) 399-0414.

As a reminder, City Hall and other municipal offices will be closed on Thursday in observance of Veterans’ Day. Trash and recycling will be delayed one day next week.

Pain and Glory next Movies with Spirit screening November 20

Antonio Banderas and Penélope Cruz star in the Movies with Spirit screening Pain and Glory, a witty, intelligent, sensuous drama about an aging film director reflecting on his life, on November 20 at 7 p.m. at the DRAW arts education and exhibition space, located at 20 Cedar Street in Kingston.

A story of memory and creation, youth and its loss, Almodóvar’s semiautobiographical memoir depicts a series of encounters experienced by fictional aging film director Salvador Mallo (Banderas), now in physical decline and in the middle of a creative crisis. The 2019 movie won 69 US and international festival and critic awards, including the Palme d’Or, the highest prize awarded at the Cannes Film Festival.

The screening will be followed by a facilitated discussion. Refreshments will be served. Attendees over age 12 are asked to contribute $10 a person.

Movies with Spirit screenings comply with all federal, state and local health and safety protocols, including those of the screening venues.

The monthly Movies with Spirit series, organized by Gerry Harrington of Kingston, seeks to stimulate people’s sense of joy and wonder, inspire love and compassion, evoke a deepened understanding of people’s integral connection with others and with life itself and support individual cultures, faith paths and beliefs while simultaneously transcending them. The films are screened in diverse places of worship and reverence – and this season in a place for art, too, across Ulster and Dutchess Counties at 7 p.m. on the third Saturday of every month. The series has no religious (or artistic) affiliation.

Pat and Allen Littlefield of Gardiner were at the opening of the show on Saturday. Pat had two works in the exhibit and Allen is a retired Kingston High School art teacher.

Arts Society of Kingston November exhibit

The Arts Society of Kingston is featuring a juried photography exhibit with the theme Echo in the Valley throughout the month of November. Artists submitted work that highlighted the stunning attributes that make up the Hudson Valley, both physical and spiritual alike. Jurors were Jen Kiaba and Julio Nazario. Twenty-eight images from 21 photographers were selected. The Best in Show award went to Nancy Donskoj of Kingston with her “Morning Light” entry.
