Beginning with John F. Kennedy in 1963, it has become a tradition for the country’s president to “pardon” the turkey gifted to him during the national Thanksgiving turkey presentation.
In Saugerties, a six-year tradition exists for the Diamond Mills Hotel & Tavern to carry out a different kind of turkey-based charitable act. As the host of one of the largest Thanksgiving brunches in the Hudson Valley, Diamond Mills contributes some of the earnings from the event in the form of turkeys and prepared side dishes for those in need.
“I like to think of this gift as a portion of the proceeds from that annual dining experience going to others not as fortunate as those joining us at Diamond Mills to dine on Thanksgiving,” said owner Tom Struzzieri, local horse-shows mogul, in a press release. “Diamond Mills hopes to be in a position to continue this custom for many years to come.”
This year, Diamond Mills gave a record 1500 turkeys and accompanying side dishes to the Thanksgiving meal program run by the People’s Place food pantry and thrift store of Kingston. Some 1500 families pre-registered for the program this year. Diamond Mills and People’s Place will be distributing turkey, stuffing, potatoes, cranberry sauce, green beans, corn, butternut squash and apple pie to each applicant.
“People’s Place is beyond grateful to have a community partner like Diamond Mills who understands the true value of a holiday gathering shared with family,” said Christine Hein, People’s Place executive director. “Many happy memories will be created this Thanksgiving due in large part to the kindness of Diamond Mills. Both Diamond Mills and People’s Place hope this program allows families to gather together, create happy memories, and celebrate the holiday.”
