“Green Amendment” lecture at SUNY-Ulster

Dr. Darryl Banks

There’s a growing rumble of popular interest in a movement to pass a “Green Amendment” or Environmental and Social Responsibility Amendment to the US Constitution. It takes varying forms, but in general would establish a constitutional right to a healthy environment, grant the natural environment “personhood” and standing in court and/or require large corporations to recertify at regular intervals that their business practices are environmentally responsible or lose their charters.

For those who’d like to know more, “Would a Constitutional Amendment Really Help the Environment?” is the title of this year’s Constitution Day Lecture at SUNY-Ulster, sponsored by the Dr. Donald C. Katt Institute for Constitutional Studies and the Ulster Community College Foundation, taking place at 6 p.m. on Monday, September 17 in the College Lounge of Vanderlyn Hall. The presenter is Dr. Darryl Banks, OBE, Rhodes Scholar, distinguished scientist, author, environmental policy expert and New York’s former deputy commissioner for Environmental Quality. Banks has also held leadership roles at the US Environmental Protection Agency, the Center for American Progress, the Rand Corporation and the World Resources Institute, and served as a Congressional Science Fellow.

This event is free and open to the public. For information, call (845) 687-5262 or e-mail kaufmand@sunyulster.edu.
