In the ’70s and into the ’80s, the saxophone was the first non-canonical rock instrument that rock would reach for. In the doleful ’90s, it was the doleful solo cello. In the aughts and beyond, it has been brass – and not solo trumpets or trombones, but rich brass ensembles spanning backline funk and classical chamber styles. In recognition of this renaissance, of brass’ moment in the sun, we have the Hudson Valley Brassroots on Saturday, July 28 from 1 to 10 p.m.
Brassroots is a one-day affair with no fewer than eight brass ensembles performing at Seed Song Farm, located at 160 Esopus Avenue in Kingston. The bands on the bill are some of the best-known in the genre, including Brooklyn’s Raya Brass Band, the What Cheer! Brigade and our own marching surrealists, the Rosendale Improvement Association Brass Band and Social Club.
