A possible third candidate has emerged for the state Assembly seat formerly held by Pete Lopez.
On February 20, Wes Laraway of the Schoharie County town of Middleburgh announced that he had submitted a petition with over 2,000 signatures to the state Board of Elections in Albany. According to a release from Laraway, a team of 100 supporters gathered the signatures in just eight days.
If the board approved Laraway’s petition, he will appear as an independent candidate beside Aidan O’Connor of Greene County, who is the Democratic candidate, and Christopher Tague of Schoharie County, the Republican candidate.
“This campaign is only a reality because of the volunteers, friends, and family who believe in the message of this movement — that people do not want politics as usual,” said Laraway in a statement. “The other parties made their choice behind closed doors, but our supporters knocked on the doors of over two thousand voters to offer them a true choice; the best choice.”
In this special election, announced by Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Feb. 6, county party committees chose O’Connor and Tague to run. The election is April 24.
