The stretch of Partition St. in the village of Saugerties directly south of Main st. is home to dozens of businesses that face one another across a relatively narrow street (compared to Main St. anyway), with on-street parking on both sides limiting visibility. The conditions are ripe for jaywalking and “car vs. pedestrian” incidents, as the police department refers to them.
A few years ago, the Saugerties Police Department began cracking down on jaywalking in the area, including ticketing pedestrians who were struck by vehicles while crossing illegally.
According to police, that happened once again yesterday afternoon at around 1:30 p.m. near Montano’s Shoe Store. Police said Robert McCrindle, 66, of West Park, stepped off the curb and into the northbound lane of Partition St. directly into the path of a 2011 Subaru Outback, operated by Judith Lechner, 77, of Saugerties.
McCrindle sustained shoulder and hip injuries, and was treated at the scene by Paramedics from DIAZ Ambulance and first responders from the Village of Saugerties Fire Department. McCrindle was transported to the Kingston Hospital for further treatment.
McCrindle was cited by the Saugerties Police for failure to Yield Right of Way to Vehicle, defined under New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law Section 1152 -§ 1152: Crossing at other than crosswalks. (a) Every pedestrian crossing a roadway at any point other than within a marked crosswalk or within an unmarked crosswalk at an intersection shall yield the right of way to all vehicles upon the roadway.
