With no potential candidates, the Woodstock Republican Committee has canceled its caucus. That leaves the town supervisor, two Town Board seats and the County Legislature seat unopposed for the November election.
Since there is no contest on the Democratic side either, there will be no Democratic Primary.
“The Woodstock GOP is committed to keeping Woodstock a two-party town so that voters have a choice,” said committee Chairman Gerald Wheeler in a letter to the editor. “We believe that a well-run town government is essential to the public good and we look forward to participating in the next election.”
Asked if the town Republicans could not solicit interested candidates, Wheeler declined to elaborate, saying his letter speaks for itself.
The Democratic candidates on the November ballot are:
Town Supervisor — Bill McKenna
Town Councilman — Richard Heppner, Lorin Rose
County Legislature — Jonathan Heppner
Town Justice — Richard Husted
Councilwoman Cathy Magarelli is not seeking re-election.
Library Trustee and former Golden Notebook owner Barry Samuels campaigned ran for town councilman in June, but a complaint to the county Board of Elections invalidated his petition for ballot. Samuels had written “Town Board” instead of “Town Councilman” on his petition.++
