June Jamboree at Woodstock Farm Sanctuary in High Falls

June Jamboree at Woodstock Farm Sanctuary in High Falls

(Dion Ogust)

(Dion Ogust)

Where can you meet more than 350 friendly rescued cows, pigs, goats, turkeys and other creatures in one place on one special day? At the Woodstock Farm Sanctuary’s June Jamboree, of course! Come to the farm animal sanctuary in High Falls for a full-out celebration with family fun activities, award-winning veggie food trucks and booths (including Cinnamon Snail and Little Apple), live music and delicious vegan food, snacks and soft-serve ice cream.

The Jamboree is the place to learn all about the environmental, ethical and health aspects of going vegan. Vegan cookbook author (The Veganomicon, Salad Samurai, Vegan Eats World) Terry Hope Romero will emcee the event, which will include a noontime presentation and demo on vegan meal planning with Isabelle Steichen (of Buddhalicious fame) and vegan chef, health coach and cooking instructor Jenne Claiborne (Sweet Potato Soul, soon to be released).

From 1 to 2:30 p.m., local vegan music (you didn’t know there was such a thing, right?) will be performed. Just kidding: The musicians are the vegans. Power-rockers Tara Pelletier, Jeff Kurosaki and Kate Larson (of Real Things and Hot Temper fame) bring their ‘90s revival/grunge stylings to the stage. Then cookbook authors and Vegan Mos entrepreneurs Ethan J. and Michael Ciment will present a cooking demo that proves that the traditional flavors of the diners and delis of Brooklyn can indeed be enjoyed at the plant-based table. A book-signing for their newest offering NYC Vegan! will follow.

Drop-in yoga sessions at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. will be led by L. J. Steinig, a 20-year yoga practitioner and instructor since 2005. Steinig will lead gentle yoga for all ages and skill levels (bring your own yoga mat to participate). Meanwhile, Brooklyn Nurse Practitioners (BNP) will have a table throughout the event to answer questions about plant-based health and nutrition. BNP is a comprehensive primary-care clinic dedicated to providing the best care possible to patients through a multifaceted, plant-based approach to healthcare.

Bring the whole family for face-painting, crafts, a bouncy castle, a waterslide and vegan- and animal-themed tattoos done on-site to commemorate the celebration! Advance tickets have the same price as regular admission ($10 for adults, $5 for kids aged 4 to 12, infants and toddlers free), and current members get $5 off. Five people (adults or kids) in one car get a $30 carpool discount ticket. Please note that dogs are not allowed on sanctuary property for the health and safety of the rescued animal residents (registered service dogs are always allowed).

June Jamboree, Woodstock Farm Sanctuary, Saturday, June 17, 10:30 a.m.-5 p.m., $10/$5, 2 Rescue Road, High Falls; (845) 247-5700, www.woodstocksanctuary.org/events/june-jamboree-2.
