The music kicks off at noon on Saturday, August 4 at Farmageddon 2012, when a myriad of bands will converge in a pastoral field on an 86-acre farm at 110 Lauren Tice Road for a 12-hour music festival. A portion of the event’s proceeds will be donated to benefit the Saugerties Central School District’s Musical Arts Department, as well as to the Town of Saugerties itself.
Groups like Spin Cycle Lava, Voodelic, Martyr Art, the New Creek People, Zonder Kennedy & the Scoville Junkies, the Jonny Monster Band, Lex Grey and the Urban Pioneers, Liquid Ernie, Conehead Buddha and Funk Button will perform a variety of types of music, from rock to folk to blues. Refreshments will be available from Dave’s Coffee House, Pippy’s Hot Dog Truck and Jumpin’ Jack Flash Kitchen on Wheels. Tickets cost $40, available at the gate on the day of the event, or by advance purchase at Dave’s Coffee House on Partition Street and Two Brothers Pizza and Deli on Route 32 in Saugerties.
The event is only for those aged 21 and over; IDs will be checked at the time of ticket purchase and at the gate on the day of the event, and security will be present at the concert.
Lacey McMahon and Bill Cusack, siblings and lifelong Saugerties residents, are organizing the event, along with the help of a great many other people, says McMahon, including artist Brandon Chrisjohn, who created the event’s logo, and Jackie Peeler, Dave Meade and Scott Grower. “A lot of people have helped us put this together,” she says. “So many people have been generous and supportive.”
“With all the budget cuts to the programs in the schools in recent years, we see the kids in the Music Department losing out,” says McMahon. “We’re doing this because music is really important to us in our family; it’s something that we grew up around and love. My brother plays all kinds of instruments, and I play guitar and sing, and a lot of what we learned was through the schools here in Saugerties. This event gives us a chance to give back to the people who gave to us.”
A variety of craft vendors will be present, including a glassblower doing a demonstration; and there’ll be several music-related raffles – one for a drum set donated by Music Works in Saugerties, whose proprietor taught music in the schools for years.
“This is the first event like this that we’ve ever done,” says McMahon. “We hope that it goes well, and we can do it every year.”
