It’s like an addiction. Once a film and theater venue gets itself set up to screen high-definition simulcasts – say, of the Metropolitan Opera – the opportunities to show more become practically endless. Someone with a bottomless thirst for high culture could easily spend all four days of the next two weekends at Time & Space, Limited (TSL), soaking up terrific programs from the National Theater of London Live and Stage Russia. Oh, happy Hudsonites!
The wallow starts at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 22 with the National Theater’s production of Terence Rattigan’s 1952 drama The Deep Blue Sea, directed by Carrie Cracknell. Helen McCrory – an actress familiar to cable-watchers as Aunt Polly in Peaky Blinders and Evelyn Poole in Penny Dreadful – plays the suicidal Hester Collyer, acclaimed as one of the greatest female roles in contemporary drama. Tom Burke co-stars.
Come back at 1 p.m. on Sunday, October 23 for the inaugural show of Stage Russia: a live filmed production of the Moscow Vakhtangov Theatre’s newly reimagined version – not the familiar Tchaikovsky opera – of Alexander Pushkin’s novel-in-verse Eugene Onegin. Rimas Tuminas directs; Sergey Makovetskiy portrays the cynical dandy of the title role. Filmed in September, the broadcast is presented in Russian with English subtitles.
National Theater of London Live returns at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 29 with another opportunity to catch one of the two filmed versions of Danny Boyle’s celebrated 2012 stage production of Frankenstein. In its Olivier Award-winning London run, two TV Sherlocks, Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller, took turns playing Victor Frankenstein and his undead creation. Both shared highly enthusiastic reviews.
Stage Russia HD returns at 1 p.m. on Sunday, October 30 with the Moscow Art Theatre’s centennial production of Anton Chekhov’s classic study of the twilight of the Russian aristocracy, The Cherry Orchard. Adolf Shapiro directs, Renata Litvinova stars as the matriarch, Madame Ranevskaya. The performance is presented in Russian with English subtitles. There will be a second screening at TSL on Saturday, November 5 at 6:30 p.m.
Tickets for all shows cost $20 general admission, $18 for TSL members and $15 for students. To order, or for more information, visit https://timeandspace.org/event-category/live-broadcast or call the venue at (518) 822-8100.
