TSL to screen National Theatre of London’s Deep Blue Sea & Frankenstein and Stage Russia’s Eugene Onegin & Cherry Orchard

You have another opportunity to catch one of the two filmed versions of Danny Boyle’s celebrated 2012 National Theater of London Live stage production of Frankenstein at TSL in Hudson at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 29. In its Olivier Award-winning London run, two TV Sherlocks, Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller, took turns playing Victor Frankenstein and his undead creation. Both shared highly enthusiastic reviews. In this encore presentation, Cumberbatch will play the Creature and Miller will play the role of Victor Frankenstein. It’s like an addiction. The wallow starts at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 22 with the National Theater’s production of Terence Rattigan’s 1952 drama The Deep Blue Sea, directed by Carrie Cracknell. Helen McCrory – an actress familiar to cable-watchers as Aunt Polly in Peaky Blinders and Evelyn Poole in Penny Dreadful – plays the suicidal Hester Collyer, acclaimed as one of the greatest female roles in contemporary drama. Tom Burke co-stars.

Come back at 1 p.m. on Sunday, October 23 for the inaugural show of Stage Russia: a live filmed production of the Moscow Vakhtangov Theatre’s newly reimagined version – not the familiar Tchaikovsky opera – of Alexander Pushkin’s novel-in-verse Eugene Onegin. Rimas Tuminas directs; Sergey Makovetskiy portrays the cynical dandy of the title role. Filmed in September, the broadcast is presented in Russian with English subtitles.

Stage Russia HD returns at 1 p.m. on Sunday, October 30 with the Moscow Art Theatre’s centennial production of Anton Chekhov’s classic study of the twilight of the Russian aristocracy, The Cherry Orchard. Adolf Shapiro directs, Renata Litvinova stars as the matriarch, Madame Ranevskaya. The performance is presented in Russian with English subtitles. There will be a second screening at TSL on Saturday, November 5 at 6:30 p.m.
