Capt. Jack Rose, the 19-year-old fireman whose death in the line of duty led to an outpouring of grief from the community and firefighters across the nation, died from smoke inhalation, according to a joint statement by New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control and Saugerties Police.
According the statement, Rose died as a result of “the inhalation of superheated gases, leading to irreversible respiratory failure, subsequently resulting in cardiac arrest.”
Prior to this, the cause of death was still under investigation.
Investigators said the fire was accidental and involved a wood stove.
The investigation into the events that led up to Rose’s death is ongoing, according to the report.
