The New Paltz Bicycle and Pedestrian Committee will conduct a survey of New Paltz residents and visitors who walk or bike in the community. The survey will take place October 21-27. Committee members are seeking information about your impressions of New Paltz as a place to live, work and shop that does not rely 100% on automobiles. “We envision a community as welcoming to walkers and bicyclists as to those in cars,” said committee chair Bill Weinstein. “Your answers to the two-page survey will help to initiate real change.”
The public will encounter survey boxes at 15 locations. At press time, these included the town and village halls, Bicycle Depot, Elting Library, Jenkinstown Motors, My Market, Performance Sports & Wellness, Rino’s Pizza, Starbuck’s, The Bakery, The Bicycle Rack and True Value Hardware. “We’re adding new places every day,” said Weinstein. “If you can suggest a likely site, let us know.”
According to Weinstein, bicycling and walking are a means of transportation which contribute to a healthy, sustainable community with a good quality of life. The mission of the committee is to encourage widespread, safe and responsible use of these forms of transportation and to advocate for better and safer conditions, access and facilities for walking and cycling.
“We seek to upgrade and expand bicycle and pedestrian facilities,” he said. “As a joint town-village committee, we link the two New Paltz governments and have a special relationship with their planning boards and building departments. We communicate with Ulster County and New York State traffic and transportation officials. The committee urges everyone to make his or her voice heard. Together, we can improve the quality of life in and around New Paltz — our lovely and vital community.”
