Wendy Hollender, based in Accord but world-renowned for her botanical illustrations, is not only opening a new exhibit, “Botanical Edibles: Wild and Cultivated,” at Ulster County Community College (UCCC) this week, but also doing a lecture and slide presentation as part of her duties as the school’s Larry Berk artist-in-residence for the semester. Hollender’s friends Jay Ungar and Molly Mason will be playing at her opening, which follows her talk this Thursday, January 26, with events kicking off at 7 p.m.
Hollender is a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design who shifted to her current specialty in the late 1990s after years as a home-furnishings designer. She now teaches around the country at the New York Botanical Garden and the National Tropical Botanical Garden in Hawaii, as well as at the Mohonk Preserve and Mountain House. Her books Botanical Drawing in Color: A Basic Guide to Mastering Realistic Form and Naturalistic Color and Botanical Drawing: A Beginner’s Guide are continuing top-sellers; her illustrations run regularly in The New York Times, Oprah Magazine, Horticulture Magazine and Smithsonian Magazine. And Hollender has exhibited at the Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation, the Royal Botanical Garden at Kew and the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History.
The new show at UCCC’s Muroff-Kotler Gallery, open most weekdays, runs through February 24. The opening reception, lecture, slide presentation and concert take place this Thursday, January 26 starting at 7 p.m. in the galleries located in SUNY-Ulster’s Vanderlyn Building, on its campus outside of Stone Ridge.
