Legal troubles mounted for former Kingston bar owner Robert M. Stango last week after he was arrested for felony assault in what police describe as a domestic violence incident.
According to police, Kingston cops were called to the victim’s Abeel Street residence around 4:15 a.m. on Tuesday, March 6. Stango allegedly pushed the woman into a window, threatened her with a kitchen knife and yanked a phone from her hand when she tried to call 911. According to police, Stango struggled with officers when they found him hiding in an attic at the residence.
Stango was arrested and charged with felony assault and misdemeanor counts of menacing, resisting arrest, criminal mischief, resisting arrest, obstructing governmental administration and endangering the welfare of a child. Stango was arraigned in Kingston City Court and sent to the Ulster County Jail. He was later released by order of the court.
Stango is still facing felony charges of riot and criminal mischief stemming from an eviction eve party at the Basement, a Broadway bar then owned by Stango. According to police, Stango destroyed bar fixtures and encouraged patrons to do the same at the Oct. 7, 2011 blowout, one day before he was due to be evicted from the business for nonpayment of rent.
