The Town of New Paltz has announced that it will again be doing leaf and yard refuse collection this fall. The old leaf collector became unusable last year, and the cost of repairs was more than the machine was worth. Residents were able to bring yard refuse to the recycling center on Clearwater Road, but this was an added difficulty for many.
Deputy supervisor Jeff Logan and highway superintendent Chris Marx set out to find ways to solve the issue, and they did. The chassis and drivetrain of the vehicle is a 1997, with the leaf collection box, controls and motor all new. “With this truck and the size of the collection box, we will be able to use our men and machinery much more efficiently than in the past,” said Marx. “In addition, the shredding capabilities of the leaf collector are able to produce reusable mulch at our Clearwater Road reuse center, which is part of the town’s revenue stream. I look forward to setting the schedule with the Town Board for the fall for our pickup.”
“It was a pleasure to work with Chris on this project and to find the creative ways to save money without cutting services,” said Logan. “We were able to purchase the leaf collector that will also be used to clear ditches and water catch basins, and we have submitted for a reimbursement grant through the state. I look forward to seeing it in operation, cleaning up the leaves from yards and roadsides and providing the service that so few communities can afford to do any longer.”
