For those who prize Kingston music venue Tubby’s for booking big-name, next-level, mind-blowing acts, few venues could be more deserving of receiving a grant.
The popular Kingston music venue and bar recently received a Music in Action grant from the Live Music Society, a nonprofit dedicated to sustaining small venues across the country. The grant supports community-focused programming and aims to help independent music spaces deepen their local impact.
Tubby’s (586 Broadway) is using the funds to launch a series of free concerts, including a special seven-night run of shows to celebrate the venue’s seventh anniversary.
The seven-day anniversary celebration will take place from September 22 through September 28, with a different free show each night. The lineup includes a surprise guest on September 22, Reymour on September 23, Frankie Rose on September 24, Steve Gunn on September 25, DJs Frantz and Ron Like Hell on September 26, Memorials on September 27, and a special final night lineup on September 28. All shows are free and open to the public on a first-come, first-served basis, with no tickets or pre-sales required.
In addition to the anniversary week, Tubby’s has already begun hosting its monthly free concert series made possible by the grant, featuring acts such as Colombian accordionist Yeison Landero in July. The next installment is scheduled for September 6 with indie rock stalwart Ted Leo.
Like many Tubby’s shows, expect these freebies to get packed quickly. The 100-cap venue regularly hosts bands that normally play for several hundred people on tour every night, yet you’ll also find out-there experimental acts stacked with independent music luminaries and other fringe-dwelling, genre-bending mavericks of music.
Musicians love the venue for its dedication to supporting amazing performances, its free-spirited atmosphere, killer gear swaps and an obsessed, built-in fan base that Tubby’s proudly calls a “cult”.
