Part-time Saugerties police officer Sydney Mills was arrested this morning “following an investigation into alleged illegal sexual acts”, according to a statement by the Saugerties Police Department.
Mills was charged with the felonies of criminal sexual act in the second degree, criminal sexual act in the third degree, rape in the third degree, and the misdemeanor of sexual abuse in the third degree. According to police, he was arrested by the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office Emergency Response Team at the Saugerties Police Department where he worked.
Police say the investigation started months ago when an officer received information about alleged assaults and brought it to the Chief of Police. In conjunction with Ulster County District Attorney Emmanual Nneji, an independent investigation was launched, which resulted in the aforementioned charges.
“At this time, Mills has been remanded to the Ulster County Jail without bail,” the statement read. “The Saugerties Police Department is committed to transparency and accountability in our partnership with the community. We understand that public trust is essential for our agency’s effectiveness, and we will continue to work towards maintaining that trust. We want to assure the community that we take these allegations seriously and will cooperate fully with the investigation. We are dedicated to providing a safe and secure environment for our citizens, and we will not tolerate any behavior that compromises the trust our community deserves.”
