Kingston police warn against launching fireworks as Independence Day nears

Kingston announces plans for July 4 festivities

The Kingston Police Department took to social media to warn residents that they will be “cracking down on illegal fireworks in the City of Kingston.”

According to the post, “Sparkling devices are the only legal fireworks in New York State.
The only sparklers that are legal are ground-based or handheld. Any firework that launches is illegal.”

Each year, dozens of residents launch fireworks all across the city of Kingston, enveloping neighborhoods in smoke and loud explosions. A small but significant percentage of these fireworks are illegal. Police will be on the lookout for offenders even as they provide crowd control and security for the city’s well-attended fireworks show.

Bottle rockets, roman candles, aerial fountains, firecrackers, and other launching or explosive fireworks are illegal statewide (and doubly so in NYC, where sparklers are also banned).
