Ulster County’s last Rite Aid set to close in Kingston

The exodus of large chain retailers in Ulster County continues. The Rite Aid on Broadway in Kingston is set to close in the coming months following the company’s second Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing in two years. While stores remain open for now, Rite Aid will sell off assets and may transfer prescriptions to other pharmacies, though details remain unclear.

Starting next month, the company will end rewards programs, stop honoring gift cards, and halt returns. Shoppers can still access in-store and online services, but inventory is expected to dwindle.

Pharmacies have faced mounting challenges in recent years due to shrinking prescription profit margins, increased competition from online retailers, rising theft, and costly legal settlements related to the opioid crisis.
