Authorities are investigating a suspected murder-suicide involving a Kingston couple that occurred on April 23.
At approximately noon, the Town of Ulster Police responded to a report of an individual who had jumped from the Kingston-Rhinecliff Bridge. The body recovered from the scene was identified as 45-year-old Caleb Smith.
Following this discovery, officers went to a residence on Fair Street in Kingston to notify Smith’s family. Upon arrival, police found the body of a woman later identified as 37-year-old Kaleigh Griffin, Smith’s wife.
The City of Kingston Police Department joined the investigation, which indicates that Smith fatally stabbed his wife before taking his own life by jumping from the bridge. Both individuals were residents of Kingston and had previously lived in Connecticut.
The couple are parents to two young children, who are reported to be safe and currently in the care of family members.
The case remains under active investigation, with assistance from the New York State Police and the Ulster County District Attorney’s Office. Authorities are urging anyone with information related to the incident to contact the Kingston Police Department Detective Division at (845) 331-8404 or via email at detectives@kingston-ny.gov.
