New Paltz Town Council members get 30 days to consider any local dispensary applications that get submitted through the state’s office of cannabis management. At least half a dozen have been reviewed for comment since the plant was legalized for adult recreational use, but only two have been opened in New Paltz thus far. It’s not clear how much weight is given to this kind of feedback during the byzantine approval process, but council members have taken the requirement seriously.
A new application has been submitted by Parth Patel, with the proposed location 255 Main Street, the building attached to the beverage store that has had several taco places in it in recent years. Supervisor Amanda Gotto advised that this would be just outside of the minimum distance from the middle school, but that the town’s youth center would be just inside the line. While council members agreed that this caused them concern, they were not sure if that same rule would apply to any location at which there was programming intended to gather children. They decided to hold off on submitting comments — which must be provided on paper, and cannot be sent electronically — until their April 3 meeting.
