Dogs must now be leashed in Olive parks, new fines for faulty smoke and carbon monoxide detectors

More broadband competition for Spectrum in New Paltz?

The days of dogs running free in the fields of Lester S. Davis Park, Olivebridge Park (aka Tongore) and Grant Avery Park are done thanks to a new policy recently enacted by the Olive Town Board.

Dogs will now need to be leashed in Olive’s parks. Town officials expressed hope that the new policy would create cleaner recreation spaces with less dog waste left behind by careless pet owners. Though rare, incidents of dogs injuring humans — such as a serious attack High Falls last year — would also be deterred by leashing.

At the same meeting, the Town Board also approved its first new law of 2025, addressing false fire and carbon monoxide alarms in Olive, often caused by faulty equipment or negligence. Emergency responders, already stretched thin, expressed frustration and concern at the frequency of their responding to false alarms. Now property owners could get hit with fines ranging from $250 to $500 (for repeat offenses) if responders arrive to find a faulty alarm and no emergency.
