David Walton, a 42-year-old co-owner of Hudson Valley Goldsmith in New Paltz, faces charges of aggravated assault following an incident at a jewelry trade show that led to the death of another jeweler, David Ettinger, 69. The event took place during the Independent Jewelers Organization show at the Hilton Anatole hotel in Dallas on March 13.
Walton was indicted on June 13 by a Texas grand jury for allegedly causing serious bodily injury to an elderly individual, specifically by pushing Ettinger, which resulted in him falling and striking his head fatally against the floor. The incident was reported just after midnight when Walton himself called 911, claiming he acted in response to an attack.
Upon police arrival, Ettinger was found unconscious and receiving CPR. He was rushed to Parkland Hospital in critical condition, suffering from multiple brain bleeds, cracked ribs, skull fractures, and an aortic dissection. Ettinger succumbed to his injuries later that day, and his death was officially classified as a homicide.
Surveillance footage reviewed by detectives showed Ettinger approaching Walton in the hotel bar, placing a hand on Walton’s arm before Walton pushed him, leading to the fall. Walton left the hotel shortly after the incident and did not respond to police attempts to contact him.
Walton secured his release by posting a $75,000 bond on March 29. His next court appearance is set for January 15.
