As of Sunday night, a forest fire in the Peekamoose Mountain area was 90% contained, with firefighters expecting significant progress toward full containment on Monday due to recent rain. The fire has affected approximately 600 acres, and 139 personnel from 18 fire departments are working to suppress it. Ulster County Executive Jen Metzger thanked state agencies, local volunteer firefighters, and others involved in the efforts. Residents are urged to avoid the Sundown Wild Forest area, and Peekamoose Road from the Denning town line through Sundown Road is closed. The cause of the fire has not been disclosed.
The region has been experiencing dry conditions, leading to a drought watch issued on November 2 by the state Department of Environmental Conservation. Previously, a forest fire in Plattekill was contained on October 28 after several days. Multiple towns in Ulster County have declared outdoor burn bans, which are uncommon at this time of year. Dutchess County has also warned residents of increased fire risk, with over 43 brush fire incidents reported in the past week. Residents are advised to avoid outdoor burning and exercise caution with ignition sources.
