Ulster County deputy director of emergency services Michael Madison was deployed to Asheville, North Carolina late last month as part of a 30-member New York State Incident Management Team (IMT) providing operational support in a city hit especially hard by Hurricane Helene. He is expected to be working with IMT in Asheville through this week.
New York was on the scene in Florida as well, with governor Kathy Hochul sending 65 National Guard soldiers and airmen on October 9 to assist the Florida National Guard’s response to Hurricane Milton.
An October 4 press release from county executive Jen Metzger’s office said Madison had reported seeing an abundance of household debris, trees, and wires down within the city and the remnants of flooding.
“As hurricanes wreak devastation along much of the southeastern United States, we are stepping up to support response efforts for those in need,” Hochul said. She said she was offering “resources, assistance and standing united with our neighbors in this time of crisis.”
