New York State Police responded to a hit-and-run motor vehicle accident on August 29, 2024, at 9:13 p.m., where a 68-year-old male was struck by an unknown vehicle while operating his bicycle on the western shoulder of Route 375 between Old Route 375 and Pond Park Roadin the Town of Hurley. The male subject was transported to Kingston hospital with serious injuries.

According to the state police, a possible vehicle of interest has been identified as a 2015-2020 Ford 150, unknown color, with possible passenger side mirror and body damage. State police are requesting anyone with information that may be related to this accident to contact them at 845-338-1702.

Since the start of 2024, there have been three hit-and-run incidents resulting in death in Ulster County.

• On January 10, Starllie Swonyoung and an unnamed friend were walking on Route 9W between Malden-on-Hudson and Saugerties at approximately 5:10 p.m. when Swonyoung was struck and killed by a 2021 Subaru.

• Just after sunset on Tuesday, January 23, Raymond Rattray’s life was ended when a dark sedan hit the college student, who was walking home from class along Route 208 just south of the SUNY New Paltz campus. The driver fled the scene after fatally striking Rattray with the vehicle. He was discovered unresponsive in the surrounding brush.

• On Friday, March 1 in Marlborough, a hit and run accident occurred killing 72-year-old Donna Cristallo while she was pushing 75-year-old Stephen Celuch across Route 9W in his wheelchair. The two were struck by a 2020 Kia Forte.

Prior to 2024, additional victims of hit-and-run incidents in Kingston resulting in death include:

• John Lynch — struck by a car in July 2021 while riding his bicycle on Washington Avenue near the Dutch Village Apartments.

• Darryl Savage — a bicyclist, was struck and killed by a bus at Greenkill and Wilbur avenues, November 4, 2020.

• Devin Griffiths — struck and killed at the corner of Broadway and East Saint James Street on September 18, 2021.

• Christine Tarasco — struck and killed on Pine Grove Avenue, December 27, 2022.

• Sarah Edwards —  hit and killed at the intersection of Spring and Wurts streets, January 6, 2023.

In hopes of lowering the likelihood of severe injury or death when people are hit by cars — especially pedestrians and bicyclists — Kingston’s common council voted unanimously on August 6 to lower the city speed limit from 30 miles per hour to 25 miles per hour, as allowed by Sammy’s Law, new legislation recently signed by the governor.
