State sales-tax collections were up 3.5 percent over the previous January in New York City, but down a significant 7.1 percent in the Hudson Valley and 3.5 percent on Long Island. The figures generated by state comptroller Tom DiNapoli’s office are subject to considerable revision.
The suburban counties close to New York City suffered the largest drops in January in reported sales taxes, with Westchester County down 10.8 percent from the previous January, Rockland 9.5 percent, and Nassau 5.5 percent.
Ulster County’s 1.0 percent revenue loss compared favorably to Orange County’s 4,1 percent and Dutchess County’s 8.1 percent. The Ulster estimated take for the month, the county government’s largest source of revenue, was $13,030,000.
Statewide collections for January totaled almost $1.9 billion.
