Unless you’ve been living under a rock (no judgment, living under a rock actually sounds kind of relaxing), you know that Taylor Swift isn’t just a celebrity, she’s a phenomenon. It’s easy to be distracted by her intentionally distracting behavior (intentionally amplified to ludicrous proportions by corporate media), but let’s not lose sight of what made her the dictionary definition of “household name”: her music. Swift is an incredibly talented singer and songwriter, and truly one of the best pop artists of the decade.
Perhaps pop isn’t your thing, but for many tweens, teens, young adults and older pop fans, Swift is a minor deity. When her The Eras Tour movie was released in theaters last year, her fans would routinely leave their seats and start impromptu dance parties in front of the screen. The enthusiasm and camaraderie of her Hudson Valley fan base evolved into this dance party at Colony, where Swift’s tunes will be pumped from the speakers as a sort of approximation of what it’d be like to see her live. Tickets for her last tour were reselling for $500 to $7,000, so this solution is fabulously more economical.
Culturally speaking, it’s an unexpected delight to see a mini-local music scene build up around an international pop star. Hopefully, her fans are inspired to make their own creative community. Perhaps the next Taylor Swift is growing up in Woodstock right now?
