New Paltz Village Board members are not going to pursue opting out of some of the new state cannabis laws. Municipal leaders have the choice to opt their communities out of having dispensaries, and may also opt out of having it be okay to use cannabis in public locations where smoking is permissible. Having no dispensaries would mean not enjoying any of the extra sales tax, though: there’s an additional four percent tacked onto cannabis sales, some of which gets split locally.
“I’d rather support decriminalization by doing nothing,” said Mayor Tim Rogers. “It’s important we de-stigmatize consumption and sale.”
