New Paltz Police Chief Joseph Snyder told Town Board members last week that he will be retiring in April 2020. He broke the news in executive session for the police commission (a body which for the past several years has been populated by Town Council members, rather than the citizens who had been appointed to it previously), but they announced it in public as soon as they returned to public session.
Snyder joined the town police force in 1987 as a part-timer and was hired as a full-time officer the following year. His rise through the ranks reached its pinnacle in 2008, when he was promoted to chief.
The current plan is to promote from within, according to Town Supervisor Neil Bettez.Â
