One is a fresh-faced democratic socialist who became a national figure after winning a primary upset against a veteran congressman in a deep blue New York City district. The other, a law professor, author and perennial progressive candidate hoping the third time’s the charm.
Democratic nominee for the 14th congressional district Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and attorney general candidate Zephyr Teachout will hold a rally at the SUNY New Paltz Student Union Building Multipurpose Room Friday, September 7 from noon to 2 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
While Ocasio-Cortez is all but assured victory in the general election, Teachout faces a tough primary Sept. 13 against Sean Patrick Maloney (currently the congressman in the 18th district), Leecia Eve, former senior policy adviser to Hillary Clinton, and Letitia James, New York City Public Advocate.
Also on the ballot are Democratic races for governor, lieutenant governor, and the 42nd State Senate and 104th assembly seats. There are no local Republican primaries.
This won’t be the first time Teachout has rallied in New Paltz with a popular socialist. She appeared with Bernie Sanders on the eve of the 2016 congressional election, when she was the Democratic nominee facing Republican John Faso.
Two years before, she challenged Andrew Cuomo for the Democratic nomination for governor. She won many upstate counties, but came up short, thanks to massive majorities for Cuomo around New York City. This year, Cynthia Nixon is taking up the mantle of progressive Cuomo challenger.
