Detectives from the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office report a fatal accident that occurred on private property near Tillson Rd. in the town of Rosendale.
On Sunday, Dec. 17, at approximately 1:37 p.m., deputies and the Town of Rosendale Police responded to a report of a snowmobile that struck an ATV near Tillson Rd. in the town of Rosendale.
An investigation at the scene revealed that Daniel Petras, 25, was traveling north through a field parallel to a wood line on a snowmobile when an ATV operated by Joshua Bennett, 23, entered the field through a gate into the path of the snowmobile. The snowmobile struck the ATV, causing serious but non-life-threatening injuries to Bennett. Petras was not wearing a helmet and was pronounced dead at the scene. The ability of the operators to see one another was obstructed by foliage along the wood line, according to police.
The Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the New York State Police, Rosendale Police and Fire Departments from Tillson, Rosendale and Rifton and also Mobile Life Support Services.
