Local kindergartner Claira Sawchuk has been chosen 2017 Poppy Girl for the Lamouree-Hackett American Legion Auxiliary Unit #72 Memorial Day services to be held on the actual Memorial Day, Tuesday, May 30 at 6 p.m. She will present a bouquet of poppies at the Donlon Wall honoring fallen servicemen, and will ride in the Fourth of July parade with the American Legion Unit.
Sawchuk is the daughter of Kevin and Julie Sawchuk and granddaughter of Brian and Eleanor Sawchuk, both members of American Legion Unit #72. Brian Sawchuk served with the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam Conflict. Her paternal grandfather, Robert L. Hottmann, served with the Int’l Guard in Madison WI from 1963-68.
Congressman John Faso will be guest speaker at the event, and Saugerties native Colonel Roger H.C. Donlon (Ret.), the first recipient of the Medal of Honor in Vietnam, will also participate in the service on the Post grounds adjacent to Partition St. The Saugerties Community Band will play several selections one-half hour before and during the ceremony. The Post Military Museum will be open for guided tours and refreshments will be served in the Post Home following the service.
