The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for snow, effective from 9 a.m. Thursday, December 29 to noon the following day.
According to NWS, snow will begin to develop that morning, making for a potentially hazardous commute, continue throughout the day and taper off that night. Winds are forecast at 10-20 mph, from the west, with gusts up to 30 mph. Temperatures will be in the upper 20s to mid-30s.
Precipitation will vary according to elevation. According to Hudson Valley Weather, towns and cities along the Hudson are forecast to receive less snow, around 1-4″. These include Kingston, Poughkeepsie, Saugerties, Hudson and Catskill. Towns in the Catskills, Shawangunks, Hurley Highlands areas are forecast to receive 3-6″ and include Woodstock, Shandaken, Ellenville, Montecello, New Paltz and Rosendale (right on the border) and Taconics (4-8″).
HVW’s forecast is similar to NWS, though with more specific local information. It states that snow will begin around 7-11 a.m., fall moderately between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., and begin to taper off from west to east between 3 and 7 p.m. I-84 is a major dividing line, with areas south of it switching over to a mix of snow and rain after noon, while north remains snow.
